TIME: 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
WHEN is pleased to support another premiere (yes, another one!) of BREATHTAKING: A FILM ON ASBESTOS. This 43 minute documentary film will be followed by a discussion with the Director Kathleen Mullen. It will be taking place on Feb 24th at 7pm at the ROM.
"Valued since the beginning of time and commercially mined since the Industrial Revolution, asbestos was coined the 'magic mineral' for its extraordinary capacity to protect against fire, and was used in everything from brake pads to oven mitts. Mullen's father died of Mesothelioma in 2003, a cancer caused by direct exposure to the fibrous material of asbestos. Breathtaking follows the director as she takes on a personal investigation into the complex reputation of this indestructible naturally occurring mineral that is still being mined in Canada and elsewhere today. Utilizing her father's deposition against the engineering companies that exposed him to asbestos, old family photographs and super 8 home movies Mullen tells her family’s story. Her journey to uncover the legacy of asbestos and her father’s history takes her to Quebec, India, Detroit and British Columbia to her parent’s home where she finds the voice to begin her fight against the present-use of asbestos."
