SC Johnson attacks women's environmental group over toxins in Johnson & Johnson baby products
This past month, WVE has been doing what we do best—exposing toxic chemicals in everyday household products and holding companies accountable.
But the truth was too much for one company: SC Johnson. Although we’ve gone to great lengths to work with SC Johnson in the past about the need for controlling and eliminating hazardous chemicals, we are disappointed with their response to our members’ concerns about their use of synthetic musks.
Hundreds of members like you sent an email to SC Johnson expressing concerns over their use of the chemicals galaxolide and tonalide in cleaning products. You asked the company to remove these chemicals.
SC Johnson had an opportunity here to engage with its customers and community members in a meaningful way; instead, SCJ responded to our members’ requests with an attack on WVE! After acknowledging that they had shared chemical information with WVE, SCJ then stated that WVE “…has chosen to ignore the science presented to them and instead launch this effort against SC Johnson”. We here at WVE beg to differ, and we have the science and research to back up our claims.
While being targeted by a global corporation isn’t what we had in mind, we take pride in the fact that as a result of WVE’s work, companies can no longer fail to address their harmful practices! This work is laying the foundation for the vision we hold dear: that companies will eventually have no choice but to respond to pressure from community members by removing these toxic chemicals.
There is much more work to be done. And we cannot do it without your support. With your contribution of $50 or more, WVE can take the next step in our campaign.

We are currently updating our report The Dirt on Cleaning Product Companies. Your support ensures that we can finish the necessary research for this report and promote the results. This watchdog report provides an overview of transparency and chemical use practices among leading cleaning product companies, and pushes companies to make changes in order to demonstrate better practices.
We cannot do this work without the support of our members. By giving now, you ensure that these corporations do not get away with continued use of chemicals that harm our communities.
As always, thank you for supporting Women’s Voices for the Earth.
