Questions and Answers About Making Cosmetics

Q: Hi Tracey,

I purchased many workshop notes from you and have taken workshops with you at New Directions. I am puzzled about the shampoo/body wash. Why does this nicely thickened product turn water-thin once an essential oil is added? How do I correct this?

thanks,
M.D.

A: Thanks for your question!

Guar gum, though cheaper and less allegenic, is more sensitive to additions than xanthan gum.

Essential oils can always change what you put them in. Peppermints gel soaps. Citrus dissolves many mixtures and thins them. Experimentation is required! Try adding only 1% essential oil first to see what effect it has on your base.

Best, Tracey
