Who's Got the Power?
Kilowatt Ours Delving deeply into the issues we are facing today with the present system of coal, oil and natural gas powering the world's energy needs, this powerful documentary examines the alternatives. Solar, wind and hydrothermal power are not only viable in today's world, they are quickly becoming absolutely necessary in our overheated environment. See how small homeowners and large builders alike are turning to solar to cut costs and get green.
45 minutes in English. Produced by Casey Coates Danson.
Suncookers
This emotion-stirring, hopeful documentary demonstrates how a simple technology and a few committed, organized people can bring about profound social transformation. The daily need for cooking wood in Africa is decimating forests. The film introduces suncookers: a solar device that uses the sun's free energy to cook and pasteurize drinking water. Margaret Owina is bringing these suncookers to villages and refugee camps in Kenya, offering an instant solution to a land ready and willing to adapt to a changing world.
18 minutes in English. Directed by Catharine Scott.
The film presentation will be followed by a discussion with local renewable energy activists and political candidates in the Federal election. All local candidates will be invited to participate.

5. Bonus Article: Trust These Essential Oils for your First Aid Kit, Part 2
Last month I wrote about Lavender, the smartie pants of essential oils, seemingly good for everything, but especially burns and as a general anti septic. This month I recommend you to chamomile, whose tea was given to Peter Rabbit when he "was not very well during the evening", and to ailing little sister Carrie in Little House on the Prairie. As a child, I wondered what chamomile tea was, and I was told that it was a weak kind of tea. I wondered if it was simply watered down "regular" tea, or some special tea. Now I know chamomile to be a powerful medicine safe for even babies - cooling fevers, soothing colds and flus, and as an essential oil, reducing inflammations and treating bug bites and stings seemingly miraculously!
Anthemis nobilis or Chamaemelum nobile is referred to as Roman Chamomile. German chamomile is its powerful and precious cousin, dark blue with azulene and reserved for the most chronic and critical of inflammations, such as in treating acne rosacea. You may also see chamomile of the mixta variety, which is not considered very useful in aromatherapy.
Chamomile should be steam distilled from its daisy-like flowers, producing a yellow-ish, apple scented oil. Since there is no such thing as essential oil of apple, this is the oil to use when making a fall apple pie perfume, with ginger, clove, nutmeg and cinnamon essential oils in tiny doses. I personally did not like the smell until I acquired the Moroccan yellow chamomile that I now carry and smelled the apple over its strong herbaceous scents.
Chamomile has a long tradition in herbal medicine. During WWII, chamomile was used as a disinfectant. Chamomile treats all symptoms made worse by stress and tension, especially aches and pains. It is therefore very effective against insomnia, PMS, mentrual discomfort and fibromyalgia. In your first aid kit, apply one drop directly to cuts and scrapes, rashes, stings and bug bites. Use chamomile dilluted in vegetable oil to soothe anything from an anxious mind to irritated skin and injuries.
Chamomile is non toxic, and one of the few essential oils that can be applied directly on the skin, though this is usually overkill except in cases of injury. Because it is related to some plants that trigger allergies, high doses may trigger skin reactions in sensitive individuals. However, many aromatherapists say that it can be a cure for these allergies rather than a trigger. On a side note, all allergies to essential oil scents are said to be psychosomatic, as when an essential oil's scent reminds us so strongly of something that we are allergic to that we experience a reaction. But allergies to the essential oil applied to the body that corresponds to a food or spice, such as to cardamon, coriander or citrus, are quite real and powerful... but I digress...
So keep chamomile essential oil in your first aid kit to put a drop on a sting, bite or scrape, and dilute it with a vegetable oil or plain lotion to soothe the skin, sinews and soul. This little wonder flower will grow on you!
Tracey TieF is a Registered Aromatherapy Health Practitioner, among other things! Roman chamomile is available to Anarres clients wholesale for $1.83 a millilitre. With 20 drops in a single ml, this costlier essential oil is still much cheaper, and more useful, than a bandaid, a sleeping pill or PMS remedy. Say you saw it here and pay only $1.50 per ml!

Send a Local Apple to City Hall in Support of Local and Sustainable Food for Toronto!
We want to send a clear message of support for local and sustainable food. What better way than with bushels of fresh and delicious Ontario apples? Right now the City of Toronto spends $11 million per year on food for its daycares, shelters, and seniors' homes. We want to make sure that they buy local and sustainable food first!
To make this happen we need to get a local and sustainable food purchasing policy passed first at the City's Government Management Committee and then at a full City Council meeting.
Help us convince Councillors to adopt a local and sustainable food procurement policy!
Sign the petition and send an apple to City Council. http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/localfood
For every signature collected we will send an Ontario apple to City Council.
David Suzuki Foundation launches "Vote Environment" website
The David Suzuki Foundation has launched "VoteEnvironment2008.ca". The website demands that the next government -- regardless of which party leads it -- address the urgent need for action on the environment. The campaign's interactive website aims to keep Canadians abreast of where the parties stand on all the issues, wade through the political posturing, and arm voters with the tough questions they need to ask of candidates who aren't being clear about their position.

More Nukes for Ontario? or Renewables?
We believe it is time to end nuclear energy's free ride. No other power provider – whether it is a community-owned wind turbine or a large gas generator – can pass on its capital cost overruns to Ontario's electricity consumers or taxpayers. This is a special deal strictly for nuclear – and it has to end. We are calling on the government to pass a Nuclear Cost Responsibility Act to close the nuclear cost loophole before we get burned again.
If you agree, or want to find out more about how Ontario could become a green leader instead of a nuclear throwback, visit our new website http://www.OntariosGreenFuture.ca and sign our petition.

Join the Fall 2008 Caravan to End Canadian Involvement in Torture, Southwestern Ontario, October 17-22, 2008
"On the moral and legal level torture is democracy's ultimate antithesis. We simply cannot torture and preserve our democratic values at the same time."
-- Manfred Nowak, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture
Join my children and I in a nonviolent community on wheels for part or all of our journey as we travel through dozens of communities in a large triangular area (Toronto to Kitchener-Waterloo to London, then through Tillsonburg, Simcoe and Welland, up through Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Hamilton and Mississauga) October 17-22.
The Caravan intends to expose and challenge the many ways in which the Canadian government is increasingly involved, both directly and indirectly, in policies and practices that result in the torture of human beings. We see this as a good opportunity to challenge all parties to commit to ending ALL forms of Canadian complicity in torture.
Please consider supporting an end to Canada's involvement in torture by donating to, or joining the caravan.
