Used as incense and for:
~ making encaustic medium by hardening beeswax,
~ making oil painting varnishes to add gloss and to speed drying.

Encaustic Painting: Damar resin is mixed with beeswax to raise the melting point, harden the paint, and add a luminous, glossy finish.

To make an encaustic medium, in a well-ventilated area:
1. Melt damar at 212-302 F with beeswax.
2. Strain to remove impurities

Varnish: Damar is used to make varnishes for oil paintings that are known to yellow and become brittle over time.

Preparation: Raw crystals should be melted and strained to remove impurities like bark or dirt.

Safety of encaustic and varnish: Considered safer than some other synthetic alternatives, but should be used in well-ventilated areas, especially when heated.
