Professional Development: I'm Attending "Talking with Your Clients about Sexual Issues"
Talking with Your Clients about Sexual Issues
A Training for Health Professionals
with Gina Ogden, PhD. LMFT
Friday, May 14, 2010, 10-4
Wonderworks, 79A Harbord St. Toronto , Ontario , CA
Health, wellbeing, and relationship are profoundly affected by sexual issues. Yet most health professionals and counselors lack the detailed training and supervision to help their students, clients, and patients negotiate sexual choices in safety and pleasure.
This training offers a practical model for opening therapeutic conversations about a range of sexual issues, and provides opportunities for specific case consultation about desire, gender identities, sexual orientation, pleasure, dysfunction, abuse, fidelity, affairs, polyamory, and more. The day is structured to encourage questions and ongoing networking opportunities among participants.
By the end of this training participants will be able to:
• Describe an expanded view of “normal”—including physical desires, emotional needs, and the spiritual longings to love and be loved.
• Discuss beliefs and stereotypes that create an age gap and gender gap in sexual attitudes.
• Examine differences between sex with a goal of performance, and relational sex that focuses on pleasure and heart-to-heart connection.
• Practice (and teach) strategies that address hot-button issues such as masturbation, sexual orientation, “hooking up,” and affairs.
• Practice (and teach) strategies to relieve the negative effects of sexual abuse and control
• Name the distinctions between sexual function and sexual satisfaction.
Who should attend: Physicians, Nurses, Social Workers, Family Therapists, Sexuality Therapists, School Counselors, and anyone working with students or clients for whom sexual issues may affect health, empowerment, or safety.
