Description: Sea Buckthorn Hippophae Rhamnoides is a spiny shrub or tree with bright red or yellow berries native to Europe and the northern regions of Asia. These berries are said to be the single highest source of vitamin C, vitamin E, unsaturated fatty acids, essential amino acids, and beta-carotene which gives them their bright colour. Because of this, the essential oil is well known for its use on the skin.
Nutrient and phytochemical constituents of sea-buckthorn berries are under basic research in inflammatory disorders, cancer mechanisms or positive effects on bone marrow after chemotherapy, or other diseases, although no specific health benefits have yet been proven by clinical research in humans. The fruit of the plant has a high vitamin C content – in a range of 114 to 1550 mg per 100 grams with an average content (695 mg per 100 grams) about 15 times greater than oranges (45 mg per 100 grams)[14] – placing sea-buckthorn fruit among the most enriched plant sources of vitamin C. The fruit also contains dense contents of carotenoids, vitamin E, amino acids, dietary minerals, β-sitosterol and polyphenols. Flavonols were found to be the predominating polyphenols while phenolic acids and flavonols (catechins) represent minor components. Of the seven flavonols identified, isorhamnetin 3-O-glycosides were highest quantitatively.
Colour: Reddish-brown liquid.
Aroma: This oil has a strong musky smell characteristic of Sea Buckthorn.
Common Uses: Sea Buckthorn Carrier Oil is reputed to be one of the best sources of natural antioxidants due to the high content of Vitamin C. Anti-oxidants like vitamin E and beta-carotene effectively combat wrinkles, dryness, and other symptoms of dry, aged skin. This oil can also be used to promote healing of burns, eczema, radiation injury ulcers and small cuts or wounds. This healing effect is due to the beta-carotene (pro-vitamin-A) that is in Sea-Buckthorn oil. Aromatherapists have credited it with reducing wrinkles, regenerating skin cells, and promoting the healing of skin injuries such as burns, sunburns, wounds and eczema.
In addition, the UV-spectrum of the oil shows a moderate absorption in the UV-B range which makes sea-buckthorn derived products attractive for sun care cosmetics. Sea Buckthorn is a fantastic choice as part of a massage blend, an aromatherapy blend, and in all types of skincare products.
Sea Buckthorn Oil is a key ingredient in many different products such as lotions, anti-ageing cream, make-up remover, shower & bath gel, shampoos, face mask, sunscreen products and various balms.
Consistency: Typical and Characteristic of Carrier Oils.
Absorption: Absorbs into skin at average speed, slightly oily feeling left on the skin.
