Saliva officinalis, steam distilled, from Spain.

Aroma: Sage Essential Oil has a spicy, sharp, and very herbaceous scent. It is referred to as having a penetrating and powerful aroma.

COMMON USES: Inhaled it is used to treat common colds, coughs, flu, and relieves congestion. May be used as a tonic to reduce fever. Also used to calm the body and mind naturally relieving stress, anxiety, and tension caused by stress. Can be used in a bath or in a diffuser to get immediate calming effects. It is a natural deodorizer and may be used in deodorants, body sprays, perfumes, colognes, air fresheners, soaps, and detergents.

Sage Oil is used in soaps, toiletries, insect repellent, bug sprays, massage oil, aromatherapy products, homeopathic products, air fresheners, lotions, face lotions, inhalants, deodorants, skin care products, hair products, shampoos, conditioners, household cleaning products, detergents, candles, body sprays, ointments, bath salts, perfumes, and colognes.

THERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES: Used as an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and astringent and to assist with female sterility as well as menopausal problems. For topical applications, Sage Oil is reputed to ease swelling, and relieve pain caused by rheumatism; and it may be used to reduce pore size, heal wounds, and infections and assist with skin conditions such as psoriasis and dermatitis.

Biochemistry

The essential oil of S. lavandulifolia has been found to have a selective acetylcholinesterase-inhibiting effect, (in as far as the regions of the brain in which acetylcholinesterase activity has been demonstrated, such areas are striatum and hippocampus) with an IC50 value of 0.03 μg/ml. The chief reason for this activity are believed to be the monoterpenes 1,8-cineole and α-pinene which have IC50 values of 0.67 and 0.63 mM, respectively. [2] [3]

Medical effects

A 2003 study indicated that S. lavandulifolia improves word recall in healthy young adults.[4]
