Sukkes: Celebration of Shelter

Sukkot Begins sunset of Sunday, September 27, 2015
Ends nightfall of Sunday, October 4, 2015

We remember how the Hebrews of the Land of Goshen, Egypt escaped from slavery in Egypt and were sheltered under the desert skies. We celebrate the Creator's kindness and reaffirm our trust in Creation by dwelling in a sukkah--a hut of temporary construction with a roof covering of branches--for the duration of the Sukkot festival (on the Jewish calendar Tishrei 15-21). For seven days and nights, we eat all our meals in the sukkah and otherwise regard it as our home.

Sukkot 2015 teaches us this year to seeks ways to help and shelter today's refugees, especially those 4 million displaced Syrians. Canada has only approved the applications of 19 Syrian refugees. We consider the experience of our ancestors and respond with fierce compasssion.
