This is a project in solidarity with the Zapatista communities and grassroots, not for profit.
The Mayan Hand-Made Products are made by women (mostly) and men from Zapatista communities in Chiapas, Mexico. The Zapatista communities are Mayan indigenous people (Tzeltal, Tzotzil, Tojolobal, Mam, Zoque and Chol) who practice autonomy, which means they have their own education system, health system, and justice system (called Good Government Councils, one in each of the five Zapatista regions) where they live by the motto of “govern by obeying the people.”
The women, in particular, maintain their traditions of weaving (through looms) and embroidering, with traditional Mayan patterns, as well as incorporating new designs and symbols, which represent their current struggle for a more just and dignified way of living. These beautiful and unique creations come from a variety of Mayan communities and Zapatista regions, which include San Andres Larrainzar, Oventic, Roberto Barrios, Francisco Gomez, Aguacatenango. Thank you for supporting these communities
Come to Anarres on this special evening to shop in solidarity with the Zapatista communities.
