Oil: Sacha inchi, Extra Virgin Certified Organic
Plukenetia volubilis L. Cold Pressed from the seeds in Peru. Unrefined. Aka sacha peanut, mountain peanut, Inca nut or Inca-peanut. Sacha Inchi are indigenous to tropical South America, as well as some of the Windward Islands in the Caribbean and it's cultivated commericially in Southeast Asia. It is one of the richest vegetable sources of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), namely Alpha Linolenic Acid (Omega 3), Linolenic Acid (Omega 6), and Oleic Acid (Omega 9). Its high concentration of Vitamin E preserves the nourishing components, freshness, and stability of the oil without the need for any additives or preservatives.
Fun Fact: When raw, P. volubilis seeds and leaves contain appreciable amounts of alkaloids, saponins, and lectins which may be toxic if consumed before cooking, but are made safe by roasting.
Colour: Clear, light yellow liquid.
Aroma: Mild nutty scent, characteristic of most carrier oils.
Common Uses: In the Amazon Rainforest in Peru, it has been cultivated by indigenous peoples for centuries, and will grow in warm climates and in high altitudes. The roasted seeds are consumed as nuts, and roasted leaves chewed or made into a tea.
Sacha Inchi oil is used in formulations meant for mature skin, creams, and lotions due to its exceptionally high antioxidant and skin smoothing properties. It soothes dry, irritated and damaged skin and scalp, making it ideal for use in liquid soaps and shampoos.
Consistency: It has typical characteristics of most carrier oils.
Absorption: It is light and absorbs quickly into the skin without leaving an oily residue.
Shelf Life: Users can expect a shelf life of 2 years with proper storage conditions (cool, out of direct sunlight). Refrigeration after opening is recommended.
